Songwork I: Technique
Selections from the 2017 Judaica Project laboratory
by Nazlıhan Eda Erçin, Agnieszka Mendel, and Ben Spatz
The core of the project was defined by a new kind of laboratory in which a formalized set of roles and relations circulated between three skilled embodied practitioners. Using this method, a wide range of songwork technique could be explored and traced within a relatively short period of time.
Songwork 0
From projects by Ben Spatz and associates
The idea of articulating songwork through a catalogue of retrospectively selected video extracts came about after an August 2016 studio session in which an external videographer documented a work demonstration. Following this session, additional selections were taken from performance documentation videos made over the previous six years. This revealed the first glimpse of what can happen when audiovisual documents of performance are treated as raw data for retrospective analysis rather than as secondary records of a finished product.
