MAGMA 2K

return to anagnorisis

The following rules define a MAGMA 2K theater piece:

1. The piece must take place in multiple locations. Every location must include elements from other locations and other time periods. No location may evoke a single time or place.

2. Sound must be produced live in direct response to the action, by a sound designer or DJ who is part of the company and who is treated like a performer.

3. The audience must not stay together in one block, and must not remain in the same place throughout the piece. (It must be both fragmented and mobile.)

4. Lighting must be produced live in direct response to the action, by a lighting designer or light-op who is part of the company and who is treated like a performer.

5. The transitions between locations, as well as the organization of the fragmented and mobile audience, must be accomplished by theatrical means and must be part of the piece. (The move from one place to another, for example, cannot constitute a "break" or "intermission" of any kind.)

6. The piece must consider and plan its effects on the audience, both physical and emotional. The piece must effect the audience in some material way.

7. Temporal and geographical alienation are required, although not constantly. (That is to say that the entire piece cannot take place in the here and now.)

8. Genre pieces are not acceptable, although some parts of the piece may be genre-based.

9. The distinction between the performers and the audience must not remain intact for the duration of the piece.

10. The entire ensemble must be credited together in one list.
