KARMA 2K

return to anagnorisis

The following rules define a KARMA 2K theater piece:

1. The piece must be site-specific. The reality of the site must be included in the work. No objects may be ignored; no space may be treated as "neutral" or "empty." (If objects are brought to the site for the piece, there must be no pretense that they were found there.)

2. Sound must be produced wholly in the context of the work. Music is only acceptable if its production as well as its presence is part of the piece. The source of all sounds must be obvious and must be included in the content of the piece.

3. The audience must be included in the physical landscape of the piece. The audience cannot occupy "neutral space" from which they observe the proceedings. The audience cannot be ignored by the structure or action of the piece; there may be no pretense that the audience is invisible.

4. Theatrical lighting is not acceptable unless the content of the piece involves theatrical lighting. The source of all lighting must be part obvious and must be included in the context of the piece.

5. All traditional theatrical effects (such as curtains and makeup) are forbidden, unless the content of the piece involves references to traditional theater.

6. The piece may not have pleasing the audience as a goal. No elements may be included in the piece because it is expected that the audience will like them.

7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the piece takes place here and now.)

8. Genre pieces are not acceptable.

9. A distinction must be made between performers and audience members. (The piece may not be fully participatory, with no distinct audience.)

10. The entire ensemble must be credited together in one list.
