"do people"
a little poetry

do people really scream and pray?

Do people really scream and pray? When do they know? What is the sign? Do they hold their children? Do they hold each other? Do strangers hold on to strangers? Do they all agree on the same god suddenly? Do they ask for help? Do they ask for more tomato juice and roasted peanuts? Do they demand to see the captain? Do they demand to speak to the owner? Do they write last elegies for their neighbords? Do they dedicate poems to the holocaust of jet fuel? Do they wish for water or do they wish for land? Do they have time to wish at all? Do they look out the window, or do they close those little shades and pretend that things are going well? Do they watch the distance coming up to meet them? Do they argue? Do they kiss? Do they look one another in the eye and whisper, "We have just this one moment, so let's take to assure ourselves that no one dies alone." Do they scream, or are they silent, or do they pray? And does it matter? Nothing will survive.
